Changing Earth Project for 4th Graders

We will be experimenting with researching and creating a website! First, you need to pick a topic:

  • Plate Tectonics
  • Earth’s Layers
  • Volcanoes
  • Weathering and Erosion
  • Earthquakes
  • Rocks and Rock Identification
  • Rocks and the Rock Cycle

Before you pick one of the above topics, you might want to browse them to see which one has enough information and also is of interest to you.

To browse, go to mattermasters.com and click on the links. Scroll down and start browsing links on the above topics.

When you have picked a topic, please fill out a think sheet/graphic organizer/brains storming page to help you organize your information.

To create an online graphic organizer, we are going to try bubbl.us.

Once you have created and printed out a completed graphic organizer, then Mrs. Allard will give you your username and password for your account on Weebly.com. Weebly.com is where we are going to create our website. The website will be published after my approval.

All of these sites, except for MatterMasters, are new things for us to try. All of them can be accessed at home. With Ms. Wiese’s approval, maybe you can use the website as your science project that is due in January!!!

Ms. Wiese’s 4th Graders

Hopefully there was no one in the computer lab and you are now seeing this message on the computer. Today you will start working on an ecosystem/habitat project. You will be choosing an ecosystem, biome, or habitat to research. But, for today, you will be exploring.

First you need to research different types of environments. Here are some vocabulary words you need to work on:

  • habitat
  • ecosystem
  • biome (pronounced bi – ome)

How are these words alike and how are they different?

Here are a few links for you to look at to start your research:

After you have explored those two sites, then explore the links below. A few might no longer be active.

Environments

We will be creating a website or PowerPoint that will include:

  • Introduction
  • Climate
  • Plants (producers)
  • Animals (consumers – herbivores, carnivores, omnivores)
  • Map/Location
  • Adaptation examples for plants and animals to survive
  • Food Chain and Food web
  • Human Impact

Solar System Project Requirements

5th graders have been working on a project on the Solar System. Click the link below to download the project page.

Here are the requirements for the project.

Or…

Solar System Project/Research

  • 3-D Model of your planet or solar system object
  • Planet name and where the name comes from
  • Composition of the planet (what it’s made of)
  • Atmosphere
  • Order in the Solar System
  • Distance from the Sun
  • Size
  • Length of time to ROTATE on its axis (“day”)
  • Length of time to REVOLVE around the sun (“year”) (also called solar revolution)
  • Temperature/temperature range
  • How many satellites
  • Rings or no rings
  • What would a 100 lb person weigh on your planet?
  • Acrostic Poem (name of planet/object used to create a list of statements)

Acrostic Poem Example

S – Solar System is a group, or system, of objects rotating around the sun

O – Only one star in our Solar System

L – Luna is another name for Earth’s moon

A – Asteroids circle the sun between Mars and Jupiter

R – Rust is in the dirt on Mars

S – Satellites revolve around planets (moons)

Y – Year is how long it takes for the planet to revolve around the sun

S – Saturn has the most beautiful rings

T – Tails of comets are made from the burning off of ice and dust

E – Earth is the only planet that has water

M – Mars will be the next planet we visit (probably)
